Pour Ma. - 3e partie

I'll try to make this blog bilingual, I apologize myself in advance to those who will read me in english.

I begun my quilting, using the 4th design I posted previously.  I also subscribe to Craftsy class Creative Quilting with your Walking Foot, to learn some tricks before beginning.  First tip, use a registration line, along with the baseline to help to keep your lines straight.

Test / Testing

I did a quick test to dermine the space betweem my quilting lines.  Half a inch doesn't have much impact, I'll go with a quarter inch, teacher's favorite.

Planification / Planning

I plan to quilt the frames first, then the vertical lines. And the FQM in frame at last.  To trace the frames, I used a chalk pencil, to make the lines very visibles.  I try an Hera Marker and a 24" ruler to mark the vertical lines and it worked out really well on a dark and solid fabric.  I also tried a gadget to trace lines with a chalk, but the lines are too thin.  In the end, I think I prefer chalk.

À gauche, le crayon-craie, à droite, le Hera Marker
On the left, the chalk-pencil, Hera Marker on the right

Half inch and quarter inch lines are eyeballed.

    1. Hi. I saw your blog, you too are making vertical lines. How do your mark them ? I also noticed you we're from Cape May, I spent summer vacations in this city two years in a row when I was young in the 80'. It was the Stockholm hotel, great memories.

    1. They work really great, but you need to sharpen them often. I never tried the mechanical chalk pencil (I don't like mechanical pencil), maybe it's the same thing, without having to sharpen them.

  5. I love my hera marker. It is surprising how well this works. At first I thought the lines would not be visible or they would fade but I have had good luck so far!

    1. I agree with you. I just quilted for an hour, lines with Hera Marker or chalk pencil. I found lines with Hera Marker more easier to quilt, because the cease make it like stitching in the ditch. The chalk erases easily. I'm taking a look at your blog.

  6. I find the Hera very helpful, if you mark before hand. It's a little hard to get a solid line if the quilt is already in my machine. :D I'll have to give those chalk pencils a try. My husband is a mathematician, so we have pencil sharpeners all over the house, so keeping them sharp wouldn't be a problem. Love seeing your process!

    1. I think a mix of both is the best: chalk for marking reference points and the Hera for all the lines. It's the first time I'm doing that kind of quilting. I don't know how the Hera behaves when there is multiples seams. Maybe another time. Thanks for coming by.

  8. Congratulations on your bi-lingual blog - great not only for quilting but also to learn French! I've had problems with not being able to remove marker pens so I use taylor's chalk if I am going to mark. I haven't seen these chalk pencils before so will look out for them

  9. Thanks for those helpful tips. I tried the Hera marker as well, but like you prefer the chalk lines.

    1. Hi. Thanks for your input. After using both, I like them both. I find the Hera marker faster to use. On a wholecloth fabric, it works very nicely. I haven't tried it on seams yet tough. It's great to have more than one tool to do the same job.
